Library

This school and community shared resource has for many years operated under the direction of the Library Committee with generous support from the Marlborough District Libraries.

EllaHuna

The library has a collection of over four thousand books available for loan by both school children and the community. A number of adult fiction books are inter-loaned every two months from the Marlborough District Library, giving a wide selection of choice. This is a very well stocked library, better than one might anticipate. Come and check it out. A variety of periodcials are also available for borrowing.

At the Feb 2013 AGM, apart from the usual agenda, a tidied constitution was adopted by those present - a copy may be found here. Should you be interested in attending the quarterly committee meetings just keep an eye out in the school newsletter. You are most welcome to attend.

The Community Library hours are 2:00pm – 3:30pm on both Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Pelorus Learning Area

Welcome to Pelorus. We are a class of 21 students, ranging from Year 5-8, 10-12 years old.

science 1024x580Schoolwide, our curriculum topic this term is Science. Pelorus students are exploring science in various ways. As well as stepping into the role of scientist, to experiment with fair testing procedures and produce a display for our school Science Fair, we will also partake in the Wonder Rocket Science Project. The Rocket Challenge is a 6-8 week unit of work exploring the real-world context of rockets. It is part of the Wonder Project, which is Engineering New Zealand’s schools programme – created especially to get young Kiwis excited about science, technology, engineering and maths. And what better place to be doing that, than where Rutherford and Pickering went to school?

Students are also researching Careers. They will be presenting their learning in the form of a Careers Expo, as a side-line to the Science fair later in term. Their aim is to explore potential jobs/careers, select one to research further and find out:

  • What duties, responsibilities and activities are involved with the job?
  • What study (if any) is required to get the job; tertiary or apprenticeship?
  • What future opportunities could open up?
  • What interests/likes or abilities would be helpful?
  • What advantages/disadvantages are there?
  • What is the average starting wage/salary and what pay increments?
  • What are the working conditions, including hours of work?

The recruit
During Literacy we will continue our involvement in NZ wide Chapter Chat - A Twitter Book Chat for NZ kids. This term the book is ‘The Recruit, by Robert Muchamore. Chapter Chat has proven to be a great way to engage students in reading, as it encourages class wide discussion and collaboration with weekly activities.

We are also trialling Literature Circles, which is much like a student book club. Students selected from a range of novels, and were then grouped according to their chosen books. Each week they meet to discuss themes within the stories, and plan their activities. It is very much student-led and aims to improve comprehension skills. We even have some students coming through from Wakamarina to join us.

Bex Learning Hubs for Maths are being used independently by students, allowing them to progress through learning at individual paces. Reading & Writing Hubs currently require more guidance. These google sites provide students with valuable information at their fingertips, to help them advance quicker and also look back, should they need to revisit any learning.

In Week 4 of Term 4 we have our class camp in Greymouth, therefore we will be likely to do some fundraising between now and then to help towards costs. There will be a quiz night for parents and wider community nearer the end of term.

As always, I welcome whanau/caregivers to come into class at any time to see what's going on for yourself and even lend a hand.

 Dates of Interest:

  • Mondays, Week 1 – 6 – Year 7/8 at Marlborough Tech Centre
  • Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15pm – Basketball skills and drills
  • Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th August – Parent-Teacher Meetings
  • Tuesday 14 August – Marlborough Cross Country
  • Friday 24 August – Pelorus Cluster Cross Country, in Canvastown
  • Friday 31 August – Marlborough Tech Challenge
  • Thursday 6 September – Science Fair & Careers Expo
  • Quiz Night – Near end of term (date TBC)

Wakamarina Learning Area

Welcome to Wakamarina. We are a class of 25 students, ranging from year 3-5, 7 – 10 years old.

Schoolwide, our curriculum topic this term is Science. Wakamarina are researching a Science Fair experiment that they will focus on to enter into our school Science Fair. They are working in groups and will make a display with their end results.

During Literacy we will continue our involvement in NZ wide Chapter Chat - A Twitter Book Chat for NZ kids. This term the book is ‘The Little House of the Prairie’ by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is taking us back in time as it is set in the 70’s and we are noticing the difference to how they grew up and ourselves.

Bex Learning Hubs for Maths and Literacy are being used to enable students to progress through their learning individually. These google sites provide students with valuable information at their fingertips, to help them advance quicker and also look back, should they need to revisit any learning.

In Week 10 of Term 3 we will be going on our class camp. So we will be doing some work around that between now and then.

 Dates of Interest:

  • Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15pm – Basketball skills and drills
  • Tuesday 7thand Wednesday 8th August – Parent-Teacher Meetings
  • Tuesday 14th August – Marlborough Cross Country
  • Friday 24th August – Pelorus Cluster Cross Country, in Canvastown

Kaituna Learning Area

Kia ora and Welcome to the Kaituna Class page. We are a group of 18 students aged between 5 and 7 years old.

Our main topic this term is Science. We are going to be investigating, observing, testing, predicting, questioning and exploring new ideas and concepts. This is going to be really hands on and great fun as we find answers through trying out our ideas.

Another significant event will be the Cluster Cross Country in Canvastown - we are practising everyday so please send your child in appropriate footwear for running.

During Maths we are looking at fractions and how they relate to everyday life - discussing time and cooking and two great ways that you can show your child how you use fractions everyday.

We will also be learning about statistics - gathering data and then representing it using pictograms, bar charts and graphs; this links well with our science topic.

Reading continues to be a major part of our program - every child is heard read every day at school either individually or as part of a group. You can make a real difference to your child’s ability to read by just taking 10 minutes every day to sit down and enjoy a book with them. Let them read to you and then return the favour by reading to them; make it a fun and enjoyable time that you both look forward to sharing.

We are also busy practising our Kapa Haka skills as we prepare to take part in Taiopenga in Term Four.

As always if you have any questions, concerns or anything that you want to talk about please pop in - the door is always open.

Our Vision

The collective vision is to provide a safe and nurturing primary learning community where trustees, parents, staff and pupils work together as a team, where equal opportunities are provided and success is enjoyed by all, where individuals are valued and learning for personal development as well as academic attainment is promoted, dual heritage celebrated and learning valued as a process that is both life-long and life-giving.

Our Values

The double dolphin exemplifies the value of consideration for others promoted in our school - the bigs nurturing the littles. Students have the task early each year to examine these concepts as each, individually and collectively, determine how their behaviour can be based on values articulated by their community both within and beyond the school, and options chosen.
